Dear Senior,
When applying to college, you MUST not be frightened by cost. 3 reasons why:
1. Almost every college in this country has a bountiful and generous financial aid program. If your family makes less than $70,000 a year, many colleges will completely waves your tuition, and some will provide you with a free ride.
2. Student-work loans are very effective and will prevent you from paying the full cost of your loan, if financial aid is not sufficient.
3. Get employed by your college! Many colleges offer teaching or TA positions to students, and will other pay you a fair sum or cover the cost of your tuition and/or other expenses.
Thus, it is very possible to pay for college. Do not be scared away by $40,000 tuition (which no one pays in full, really)! And NEVER consider going to a junior college for 2 years and then "transferring". Absolutely not an option for high-achieveing students. Smart students are wanted everywhere, and SOMEONE will be willing to pay for to go to college (even if it isn't Harvard).
Best of luck in your applications this year, and remember to tone down the stress a bit, too. It's stressing your family and friends out, too.
Best,
